The article delves into the examination of the category of time as a socio-philosophical phenomenon that forms the substrate of digital documentary cinema. In an effort to show the significance and functionality of time for transmitting the content of a particular event on the screen, the author represents existing philosophical concepts: from the physical understanding of time, which is fundamental to nature, to the existential, related to human existence (the time of being-human-in-the-world, social, historical, political, mental, etc.). Thus, the article presents the positions of ancient thinkers, philosophers of Modern times, Renaissance and modernity. It is noted that all existing forms of time have specific properties that allow them to be used in documentary cinema for different purposes. For this art direction, time becomes the foundation of the foundations and is characterized by concentration or, conversely, rarefaction, which determines the pressure inside the frame. It is the basis of historical, artistic and empirical time, that is, it acts as an indicator of reality, which is the object of display on the screen. In addition, documentary cinema itself is also a narration about time.
