В статье проанализировано учение о посмертном воздаянии для нечеловеческих живых существ и его место в истории западного богословия. Хотя вера в преображение всего творения в конце времен всегда была частью христианской эсхатологии, вопрос о посмертной судьбе конкретных животных вплоть до Нового времени не ставился. Более того, схоластическая традиция в лице Фомы Аквинского прямо отрицала участие бессловесных тварей во всеобщем воскресении. Интерес к невинным страданиям как человека, так и животных пробуждается в связи с возникновением теодицеи как особого интеллектуального проекта, ставшего продуктом секуляризации мышления. Учение о небесной награде, ожидающей животных за пережитое зло, было призвано защитить веру во всеблагость и справедливость Бога. Впервые эту апологетическую стратегию взяли на вооружение некоторые протестантские авторы XVII-XVIII вв. Тем не менее концепция воскресения животных продолжала оставаться за пределами богословского мейнстрима вплоть до второй половины XX в., когда она получила актуальность благодаря зоозащитному движению, эсхатологическому повороту в богословии и эволюционизму, уничтожившему грань между человеком и другими биологическими видами. Начиная с Ю. Мольтманна представление о посмертном воздаянии для животных пропагандируется многими католическими и протестантскими богословами как важный элемент теодицеи. При этом сторонники данной идеи зачастую стремятся максимально расширить круг претендентов на участие во всеобщем воскресении и включают в их число не только домашних животных, связанных с человеком, но и все прочие организмы, обладающие какой-либо индивидуальностью и хотя бы зачатками психики. Обсуждается сочетаемость учения об искуплении животных с теодицеей совершенствования душ, а также намечены альтернативные подходы к проблеме невинных страданий.
