Patriarch of Constantinople Grigoriy V is one of the most controversial figures inthe history of Greek orthodoxy. Since the beginning of the war for independenceof Greece in 1821 he anathematized rebels but few months later was executed andbecame a symbol of fight for freedom. This article analyzes his work by comparingand contrasting the apparent and actual person in his history.
