The paper examines the situation that has developed in higher education during the transition to online format due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The purpose of this study is to consider distance learning from the perspective of social philosophy. One of the main research tasks is to identify the need and effectiveness of moving to remote learning. Using the method of socio-philosophical analysis and modeling, the author comes to the conclusion that a complete transition to remote work is redundant. Universities exist not only for the accumulation and translation of knowledge, but also for the formation of a professional environment that is necessary for future specialists. New challenges should form a fundamentally different approach to the operation of the higher education management system, and not just lead to replacement of learning tools.
