The authors analyze the interaction between personal autonomy and social identity. They seek solutions to the problem of developing personal identity in contemporary Russian society amidst a collective identity crisis. The individualization of Russian society poses the challenge of reconciling personal autonomy with social identity amidst a policy of reviving traditional collectivist values and managing corresponding social change. Personal autonomy signifies the removal of an individual’s alienation from society and their active inclusion in social processes as a subject. Using the methodology of socio-philosophical research, the authors arrive at results with the following scientific novelty. Personal autonomy serves as a value expression of individual identity as it is constructed in the private sphere. Social identity is represented by the self-disclosure of personal autonomy in interpersonal and personal-group dialogue. On the other hand, the social determination of the individual, represented by the main factors of state civic identity, is transformed into personal autonomy as the self-determination of individual consciousness.
