The issue of the origin of morality and its connection with religion can be studied from different positions, in particular, treating the former as a will to comply with social order, and the latter as a significant factor influencing social and political processes. These concepts continue to attract considerable attention from modern researchers. This article delves into the philosophy of Mikhail Mikhailovich Tareev, professor of the Moscow Theological Academy, whose stance is distinguished by objectivity and boldness of judgments. The article analyzes M.M. Tareev's definition of religion, the boundaries of rational cognition concerning morality, and the historical stages of religious development. As a result of the study the moral right to criticize religion by an individual is proved, while simultaneously highlighting the necessity of a close union between religion and morality in the historical evolution of society. M.M. Tareev transcended the boundaries of theological scholarship, addressing the problem from a universal perspective and objectively delineating the key aspects of the relationship between religion and morality. The novelty of this study lies in the introduction of reconciling argumentation into scientific circulation and its focus against the abuse of religious dogmas. This article aims to elucidate the potential inherent in studies of morality and religion, contributing to a more nuanced understanding of their complex interplay.
