In the process of speech activity, communication participants are focused on achieving their communicative goals by controlling consciously or unconsciously the speech behavior of their opponents. The realization of a communicative goal is a complex phenomenon that includes a number of components, among which context and its interpretation occupy an essential place. This article is devoted to a comprehensive description of the category ‘intentionality’ and its functional role in interpreting the context. Intentionality makes it possible to convey pragmatic information through the unusual use of hidden meanings and indirect expression of emotional and evaluative shades, forming an emotional or ironic coloring of speech.
