The article offers an alternative view of the history of Japan from the perspective of history of its individual parts, especially the border lands, that contacted independently with foreign countries and pursued a policy and conducted trade in a way different from that of the central government. The relationship between the Japanese state and Ainu people throughout the history of Japan are examined in detail.
