The article discusses the forms and directions of the broadest profile of the application of volunteer work in museums in the United States, Britain, Germany, Canada. The experience of promoting museums professional standards of museum volunteering, conducting practice-oriented training sessions for volunteers and museum staff, replicating the best practices of volunteer resource management from recruiting to form a program of motivation and public recognition is shown. The authors show how the participation of volunteers in the life of museum helps it to become more open, understandable and attractive to different audiences. Foreign experience in the development of volunteering in museums can enable advanced Russian museums to also replenish their staff with volunteer assistants and enthusiasts, especially since modern museums have become a real scientific and cultural institution that is actively using more and more interactive programs and live communication with visitors.
