The article focuses on some parallel motifs in the novels "Waterland" of Graham Swift and "The Heart of Parma" of Aleksey Ivanov. Various essential ideas and images of these books are interpreted, such as the role of empire in the life of common people, the struggle between wild and civilized in man's soul and the image of a witch as one of the key figures in poetics of a fairy tale.
