Genre originality of A. S. Byatt's essay "Portraits in fiction"

In the article genre originality of the essay Portraits in Fiction (2001) by the English contemporary writer A. S. Byatt is investigated. This essay was based on her public lecture delivered at the National Portrait Gallery in 2000. The tradition of a lecture-essay about art and individual peculiarities of Byatt's work (self-reflection of creation, connection of fiction and criticism, choice of words and pictures, and others) are analysed.
