Pictorial reminiscence of the painting "Bubbles" in Evelyn Waugh's "Brideshead revisited"

The article explores the pictorial reminiscence of J. E. Millais' painting "Bubbles" in Evelyn Waugh’s novel "Brideshead Revisited". The analysis involves the symbolism of vanitas and homo bulla in paintings of the 17th and 18th centuries. It is concluded that the pictorial reminiscence not only characterizes the appearance and behavior of Sebastian Flyte, but also allows us to interpret his tragic destiny in a multi-valued historical and cultural context.
