The article is devoted to the analysis of one of basic methods of cognition in ancient Indian philosophy (sabda), that is related to perception of sound. It is considered in foreshortening of features of ancient Indian gnosiology. An analysis shows connection of ancient Indian gnosiology with ontology and with supersensible cognition. In comparison with the usual European sensual-rational method of cognition the ancient Indian method is a complex hierarchical system, which includes feelings, mind and ways of inner identification with the object of knowledge. The sound in the ontological aspect is powerful theogonical and cosmogonical force that gradually comes into manifestation and creates the world. The knowledge of the truth is the ascent to the highest primal sound, it goes from rough external sound that is heard through the senses, to the subtle, inaudible sound, which is perceived by the soul (buddhi) and small human spirit (atman). In the end, sabda is not just a way of knowing the truth, but the spiritual path of the ancient Indian philosopher-adept.
