Alexander Yakovlevich Gerd (1841-1888): contribution to the formation of penitentiary pedagogy

The article reveals the role of the famous teacher A.Ya. Gerd in the formation of scientific and practical content of penitentiary (correctional) pedagogy. His life and professional path are briefly described. Based on the analysis of various scientific sources, the article analyzes his activities as the head of the St. Petersburg agricultural colony for juvenile delinquents and highlights the pedagogical innovations introduced by A.Ya. Gerd for the correction of juvenile delinquents, which were unique for their time and significantly different from foreign ones.
