Introduction: Breast fibroadenoma (FA) is one of the most common benign breast diseases in young women. However, we don’ t know exact mechanisms of its growth and development. Detailed analysis of proliferation, apoptosis, and cellular interactions in benign breast diseases may help in deeper understanding of neoplastic diseases. Materials and methods: We assessed expression level of KI67, BIRC5, ESR1, PGR andMMPU mRNA in 36 breast tissue samples (18 FA and 18 surrounding breast tissue (SBT)) by real-time PCR. Results: KI67 (p=0,0112), BIRC5 (p=0,0018), MMP11 (p=0,007) and PGR expression level in fibroadenomas was higher in comparison with SBT. There was no statistically significant difference between FA and SBT ESR1 expression level (p=0,32). Besides, we found positive correlation between PGR and MMP11 expression level in FA (r=0,47; p=0,042), but not in SBT (r=0,11; p=0,65). Conclusion: The difference in gene expression levels in FA and SBT could indicate that different mechanisms of metabolic control were activated in normal and neoplastic breast tissue. Mechanisms of interaction between PGR and matrix metalloproteinases requires further study.
