The competence-based approach requires graduates of higher educational institutions to have a certain level of knowledge, skills and abilities necessary for the implementation of future professional activities. Education in the paradigm of learning with simultaneous education characterizes not only the comprehensive development of personality, but also implies the constant professional growth of graduates. At the present stage of society’s development, it is necessary to take into account a personality-oriented and gender-based approach in vocational education. The quality of professional activity of lawyers significantly depends on the communicative skills that should be steadily developed in the process of higher education. The results of formation of communicative skills among first, second and third year students studying in the field of training 40.03.01 - Law, graduate qualification - bachelor, orientation (profile): criminal law at the Kuzbass Institute of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia inNovokuznetsk are presented.The results of the study established the influence of gender on the assessment of the importance of different types of communicative skills in the professional activity of a lawyer. The study showed the need to continue working on the formation, development and improvement of the levels of communicative knowledge, skills and abilities of students in the implementation of the educational process to ensure successful professional activity in the field of jurisprudence
