The article makes a critical survey of Science Citation Index, Impact Factor, h-index - now popular bibliometric methods used to quantitatively analyze academic literature. It also briefly exposes their role and perspectives in accessing the effectiveness of researchers, or the impact of a particular paper in Russia.
