Using the example of 12.04.04. Master’s degree program «Biotechnical systems and technologies», the article considers the block-modular approach to structuring the content of engineering training. The qualitative implementation of the approach in federal universities is possible due to their freedom to establish independent educational standards. A universal model for the professional competencies’ formation from elementary results in disciplines has been developed and presented. Each module of the variable block is based on it. The effective continuity of the invariant block, where the universal and general professional competencies are formed, and variable individual trajectories aimed at the professional competencies’ formation in accordance with region needs, the material and technical equipment of the university and the interest of students in choosing a direction, results in competitive graduates in the labor market.
