Buryat language in the modern media space: positive trends

Бесплатный доступ

The article presents an analysis of the current state of the Buryat language, in particular the linguistic situation in the territory of ethnic Buryatia, current trends in attitudes towards the language, its representation in the World Wide Web. Currently, the linguistic situation is characterized by a linguistic shift from the Buryat language to Russian and a transition from Buryat-Russian bilingualism to Russian monolingualism. In contrast to this, there is a positive attitude towards the Buryat language, which, however, does not always result in concrete steps for its transfer to the next generation. Under these conditions, “top-down” and “bottom-up” initiatives to support the language are intensifying, including in the World Wide Web, where part of the Buryat community issue requests for Buryat-language Internet communication and the study of the Buryat language. In total, the Buryat-speaking segment of the Internet is represented by content in three formats: 1) the actual content in Buryat; 2) products that attract attention to the problem of language loss; 3) resources specializing in language teaching. The relevance of this content and the demand for it among a certain audience, as well as its reproduction and expansion over time, allow us to talk about its hybridity and multitasking. The article concludes about the potential of Internet-mediated initiatives as one of the directions for the revitalization of the Buryat language.
