Объектом исследования является цветовая система, разработанная в начале ХХ века американским художником и педагогом Альбертом Генри Манселлом. Основная цель статьи заключается в том, чтобы, опираясь на работы исследователей творческой биографии художника и его дневники, (1) воссоздать социокультурную ситуацию, в которой сформировалась цветовая система, и (2) выделить факторы, предопределившие ее успешность и популярность. Рассматривается специфика существовавшей в то время цветовой культуры. Анализируются стимулы и импульсы, повлиявшие на характер цветовой системы Манселла. Показаны новаторские особенности системы по сравнению с предшествующими классификациями цвета. Выделяются качества, которые помогли цветовой системе Манселла проделать непростой путь из сферы педагогики и искусства, где она появилась, до сферы науки и производства.
