The author of the essay argues on some peculiarities of the reception in Russian culture and literature of the 1860s - 1870s of one the leading English writers of the XIX century. In the essay there is an attempt to explain why, unlike in other countries, about a half of the Trollope's novels were translated into Russian at that time and published in great numbers and it marked great popularity of the writer in Russia. It is shown in the essay that the favourable translation reception of Trollope's works, and his 'Palliser' novels in particular, was connected with both liberal and democratic Russian intellectuals' search for ways of the development of the country and its political and social institutions.
