David Copperfield, Pip and Jane Eyre in "The cider house rules” by J. Irving

Бесплатный доступ

The author analyzes allusions to the novels of C. Dickens ("David Copperfield, "Great expectations", and "Little Dorrit") and Ch. Bronte ("Jane Eyre") in “The Cider House Rules" by J. Irving. The references of the Victorian in John Irving’s novel emphasizes the literary tradition followed by the author, the similarity of genres (Irving's novel is partly a Bildungsroman) and problems (all books describe the theme of unprotected childhood, the theme of learning, gaining experience and finding a young hero's place in the world). Being an important element of the world of Irving’s heroes, the works of Dickens and Bronte serve to reveal their inner world, emphasizing their similarity to the characters of the books they read and differences from David Copperfield, Pip and Jane Eyre, symbolizing the growing up of young characters of “The Cider House Rules” and remaining unchanged symbols of home and a source of moral guidance.
