Esenin as a Proletarian Poet

The early work of S.A. Esenin is examined in the context of the development of proletarian poetry in the first half of the 1910s. Arriving in Moscow in the summer of 1912, Esenin not only worked in organizations associated with the publication and distribution of books, primarily at the printing house of the I.D. Sytin Partnership, but also distributed literature with a social democratic orientation. Particular attention is given to the magazine “Ogni”, which the poet read, distributed, and planned to publish his works in. Using archival sources, the history of this publication, which was published from November 1912 to March 1913, and then closed by decision of the authorities, is traced. Esenin’s poems “In Memory of the Deceased. At the Grave...”, “The Blacksmith” and “The City” are compared with the works of proletarian poets, revealing lexical, motivic, and thematic similarities. The analysis prioritizes poems published in the newspaper “Pravda” and in the “Collection of Proletarian Writers”, published in 1914 with a preface by M. Gorky. The works of V.I. Goryansky and other “satiriconists” are also included in the historical and literary context. The article demonstrates that the period during which Esenin experienced the influence of proletarian poetry was brief. Already in the poem “City” (1915), the traditions of classical Russian literature and Orthodox culture become most significant for the poet: the lyrical hero, experiencing mental and physical torment in the city, chooses to follow the divine will.
