The research objective is to identify the key factors of successful learning of English by students of a university of tourism. The article contains a detailed analysis of the main aspects influencing the effectiveness of learning a foreign language (English) by students of the Russian State University of Tourism and Service majoring in “Tourism” and “Hotel Business”. The research employs the methods of generalization of teaching experience and content analysis of recent studies of Russian researchers. Scientific originality of this research lies in the fact that for the first time, based on the practice of teaching English to students majoring in “Tourism” and “Hotel Business” and the analysis of relevant studies of Russian researchers, the most important factors have been identified. Being understood and taken into account, these factors will increase the effectiveness of teaching English to students of a university of tourism. As a result, it was established that the effectiveness of learning English by students of a tourism university is influenced by the initial level of language training of students, their motivation to study English, the methodology of teaching English chosen by the teacher, the teaching materials used in the classroom and the number of students in one (sub)group. It was noted that the best results are achieved by students who had a high level of English proficiency before entering the university and a special motivation to learn the language. The results of the study can be used in teaching students of tourism universities and students of other non-linguistic areas of training.
