The article is concerned with the problem of individual cognitive style of current students. It is discussed in the context of the HEIs' transition to a competence based model of study. The author's understanding of what an individual cognitive style is, what role it takes in the optimisation of the academic research of students is presented. The author's definition of the phenomenon is given.
