The philosophy of religion by Maurice Blondel

The article is dedicated to the philosophy of religion by Maurice Blondel. This philosopher from his young age set a task to offer such a philosophical synthesis, which would organically combine immanence of reason with transcendence of the Christian faith and practice of everyday life, which would bridge the gap between the Catholic Church and the academic community of his time. Blondel couldn’t avoid taking part in apologetic disputes in the context of the so-called «crisis of modernism”, and that was crucial for his early works. Subsequently, his ideas contributed to the formation of such discipline as fundamental theology. An important role in his philosophical and religious quest was played by Leibniz’s hypothesis of “substantial bond”. The search for a substantial unity between various aspects of thought, being and action accompanied Blondel throughout his entire philosophical journey and culminated in the creation of a monumental trilogy published in the last years of his life. The article examines in detail the following key concepts of his philosophy: will, action, the method of immanence, the supernatural.
