This article aims to explore the current Russian practice of media literacy development within the context of school education. It aims to identify the primary approaches to media literacy formation, highlight the key challenges in the educational sphere related to media education, and propose solutions for these challenges. In the study of Russian media literacy, three main dimensions are identified: instrumental, historical, cultural, ethical, and legal. The paper analyzes the findings of a sociological research on media literacy among teachers and students in schools and vocational institutions, revealing several issues in media literacy development, including difficulties in working with information sources and a more advanced command of media tools among students compared to teachers. In connection with the results of the research, a review of documents was conducted, which revealed a paradoxical tendency towards an instrumental approach. To address this issue and achieve a qualitative improvement in the media education system, we propose a three-pronged training program for teachers.
