The practical experience of the formation of professional competencies in the research activity of students at Tyumen Industrial University is considered on the example of the development and implementation of the research project by a group of students (training area is construction) in the distance learning mode. The paper shows the importance of the research activity in training highly qualified specialists for the industry. The definition of research work at university is given, and the main types and forms of its implementation are considered. The directions of students’ scientific research under the supervision of teachers of General and Special Chemistry Department at Tyumen Industrial University and the topics of reports on the results of the research activity at scientific and practical conferences are given. The author analyzes the results of distance learning technologies, being a necessary component of the educational process, they contribute to the involvement of students in research work. The study substantiates the relevance of the development of research skills, reflected in cognitive activity, as an important component of the professional development of future specialists.
