Functional-Semantic and Typological Features of the Case Category in the Kyrgyz and Korean Languages

This article presents a comparative typological analysis of the functional-semantic and typological features of the case category in the Kyrgyz and Korean languages. The aim of the study is to identify the grammatical nature, morphonological marking, syntactic functions, and semantic potential of the case category in the two languages, determine their systemic similarities and differences, and establish the degree of functional equivalence between their case systems. Kyrgyz, a Turkic agglutinative language, expresses case relations through synthetic suffixation governed by vowel harmony and phonetic assimilation. Korean, which also belongs to the agglutinative language type, expresses grammatical relations primarily through relatively autonomous postpositional particles (josa, 조사). Despite the formal and structural differences between the Korean category of gyeok (격) and the Kyrgyz case system, the study demonstrates a high degree of functional equivalence in the realization of both primary and specific syntactic functions. Using comparative-typological, structural-functional, and component analysis methods, the study provides a detailed analysis of the functional-semantic characteristics of all case forms in both languages, identifies areas of complete correspondence and contextual differentiation, and describes patterns of grammatical interference. The findings are of theoretical significance for contrastive linguistics and comparative typology and have practical value for translation theory, translation practice, and the teaching of Korean to Kyrgyz-speaking learners.
