This article examines the hypotheses of the leading economists of different centuries, M. Weber, W. Sombart, K. Polanyi, A. Hirschman, about the origins of the origin of capitalism. A detailed assessment of the views of each of the economists on the historical situation, which, in their opinion, led to the emergence of a new economic system, is given. According to the authors, an appeal to such a topic will help answer the questions of modernity whether the possibility of applying capitalism in all countries of the world remains or it will be limited by the European and American value systems.
