The gnoseological foundations of the controversy over holy icons

This article is a republication of a little-available article by Georgiy Aleksandrovich Ostrogorskiy (1902-1976), a distinguished Yugoslav scholar of Russian origin. The article examines some issues of the Byzantine polemics on the gnoseological grounds for the veneration of icons. The article reflects the level of research on this question at the beginning of the twentieth century and may be useful to historians of both theological and philosophical science.
