The author of the article speculates on the problem of choice of fiction to be used in the process if teaching English to the students of the Faculty of Geography. This relevant and popular way of teaching English using contemporary fiction is solved in the aspect of teaching the students of geography. The author gives examples and genres of contemporary British literature suitable for the students of geography. According to the author the best possible choice of the teacher are the books containing a number of toponyms relevant for the understanding of the novel, the novels where the author deliberately leads the reader to the real places, and also the books where the hero is closely connected with the world around. The examples of fiction which can be used for geography students are contemporary social problem novels (“A Week in December” by S. Faulks or “Capital” by J. Lanchester), novels about teenagers or young people (“The House in Norham Gardens” by P. Lively) or novels, where the place is one of the most important characters (“Ulverton” by A. Thorpe). Working with these novels the students can not only expand their cultural horizons and improve their English, but also master their professional skills, doing the project on the novels, connected with their future specialty. The author's ideas are to be used in the future in the project of writing an English exercise book for the students of the Faculty of Geography, based on the books of fiction.
