Using a feature film «Witness for the prosecution» in teaching a foreign language for professional communication

In the article the methodology of using a feature film at the lesson of English for Law students is under consideration. The purpose of the article is a step-by-step description of working with a video film «Witness for the Prosecution». The definition of the professionally-oriented learning is given and its meaning for the students of non-language faculties is revealed. In this article the importance of using feature films at the lessons of English for professional communication is described. The question about students’ motivation, and how feature films influence it, is discussed. The necessity of formation and development of students’ communicative skills, which are important for their effective professional performance, is demonstrated. The relevance of the topic consists in the fact a video demonstration at the lesson expands its opportunities, leads to more sustainable knowledge assimilation on the basis of speech, situational, contextual and emotionally-expressive visibility. The procedure of working with the feature film «Witness for the Prosecution» is described in detail. The stages of working with the video film are mentioned and different tasks, which help to develop professional speaking and writing skills of Law students, are suggested. The tasks at each stage of work with the film, which were suggested to the first year students of the Law Faculty, are described. At the while-watching stage work with freeze frames and its meaning are described in detail. At the end of the article the essay of one of the students of the Law Faculty is presented. The results of using the film at the lesson and the effectiveness of working with films are presented. Video resourses allow students to improve skills to comprehend native speakers’ speech, in which the peculiarities of the national culture, alive reality are reflected, arousing students interest, their readiness to discuss problems and enter into a debate.
