Foreign language as a means of regional identity development under glocalization

Today with the processes of glocalization - complex web of global and local processes in society development - the phenomenon "regional identity" is of particular interest. Cross-cultural communication is coming not only to metropolitan agglomerates, but also to regions. In these conditions, a resident of a particular region manifests himself or herself as the case may be both as a citizen of the country and a representative of his region. In the article the term "regional identity is revealed through such complex notions as "regional" and "identity" and the interconnection between the concepts "regional identity" and "citizen of country" is considered. Besides historical backgrounds for a multidimensional socio-cultural environment of Russia formation are analyzed in the article. It is emphasized that it is Russian national distinctness has influenced the ethnic and regional diversity of our country. This fact certainly affects the role of regional identity in the process of modern society development and personality formation. The study identifies possibilities for FLL (Foreign Language Lesson) usage as a means of regional identity formation. The purpose of the study is twofold. The first motivation is to reveal the level of formation of regional identity by means of associations among students of higher education for example of Perm State University. The second motivation is to suggest ways of development of regional identity and the region positive image during ELL among the students who were born and continue their studies in Perm krai and who came to study in Perm. It is concluded that FLL is as an effective means of regional identity development. Moreover, we believe that the understanding of regional identity helps students, in some ways, to clear up their life goals and to define their life path within the region or beyond.
