The history of Chinese civilisation spans over five thousand years, resulting in the creation of the culture of Central China, which has made an outstanding contribution to humanity and made it one of the great nations of the world. Along with other arts, Chinese culture was widely represented by music and poetry. Music played an important role in the formation and development of ancient Chinese poetry. In China, poetry was originally intended for singing, and in the early stages it was presented in the form of song lyrics. The author considers the connection between music and ancient Chinese poetry on the example of «Shijing» (XI-VI centuries BC), the poems of Chu Qi (475-221 BC) and the poetry of the Han era (206 BC - 220 AD), which are works that combine poetry and music. The peculiarities of the development of Chinese vocal music in specific historical epochs: Tang (618-907) and Song (960-1279) are highlighted. The author proves that these historical periods marked the culmination of the development of Chinese genres with the inseparable unity of music and poetry on the example of fu, shi and tzu genres. The close interrelation of Chinese vocal works with the main tendencies of social and political life of the country in different historical periods is revealed. The article presents the peculiarities of integration of poetry and music, which for a long period existed and developed in inseparable unity. The role of ancient Chinese poetic and musical works in the formation and development of the country's social and political life is noted.
