Perception of the work by A. P. Chekhov in Chinese culture is considered in the article. Analysis of the interpretations of Chekhov's works by Chinese criticism shows that they were perceived in the context of the socio-political tasks facing the country in the 1910-1940’s. A. P. Chekhov is a writer whose work has gained worldwide fame. Today, he is one of the most sought-after Russian writers in the world. Readers were attracted by their deep understanding of social problems, the accurate depiction of the inner world of man, as well as the “secrecy” of the author’s position, which made it possible to “project” the content of the text on the most diverse phenomena of modern reality. The Chinese writers, critics, readers perceived tales, stories, and dramas by Chekhov as “appeals” to create “new” society and format “new” human. The article also examines traditions of Chekhov in the work of Chinese writers of the mid-XX c.
