The article provides information about the scientific activities of Johann Peter Kohl (1698-1778) from Germany, who in 1725-1727 was working at St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences. During the relatively short time of his stay in Russia, Johann Peter Kohl made a significant contribution to the study of the relations of the Russian Church with representatives of non-Orthodoxy. Having returned to Germany, Kohl continued his scientific work and published a number of essays related to Russia. He turned out to be the first professional Slavist in the Petersburg Academy of Sciences, having taken a worthy place in the history of not only German, but also Russian culture.
