Oral mucositis is one of the most common and serious complications of cancer treatment. Etiological factors of oral mucositis due to cancer treatment include the state of the oral cavity, patients' age and many other factors. The existing theories of mucositis development do not fully explain differences in the severity of mucositis in different patients. The search for the factors linked with mucositis development is an important scientific task. Patients' genetic characteristics may be associated with the risk of mucositis development. In 2016 - 2017 years, we carried out a pilot study of polymorphic variants in the genes of detoxification and the genes of the immune response in 23 patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the oropharyngeal region with varying severity symptoms of oral mucositis. The study was performed in the "Russian Scientific Center of Roentgenology and Radiology" of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation. The allele rs2070874-T of the IL4 gene appeared to be associated with the development of severe mucositis. These results show a perspective on future research directions.
