The spatial overlap and functional complementarity between border entry points and pilot free trade zones (PFTZs) have made the high-quality development of border entry points economy both currently important and valuable. This study presents the mechanisms and pathways for achieving the high-quality development of the border entry points economy in China’s Xinjiang aiming to identify how institutional innovations within PFTZ can break through the problems constraining the high-quality development of border entry points economy. The findings of the research indicate that, to clear the hurdles, the country urgently needs to break free from the path dependence on a “corridor economy” and undergo a deep transformation toward a “landing economy”, to fill the gaps in the infrustructure through a purposeful modernization, to create an intellectual and sustainable system of protection for the security reinforcement, to make the region-wide coordination mechanisms more intensified for the enhancing overall border entry points efficiency. Based on these findings, this article proposes practicle recommendations to change the situation.
