The article discusses the process of adaptation to school, which is which represents the adaptation of a child to new living conditions in an unfamiliar social environment. The indicators of adaptation, which can be used to determine the success of a child at the elementary general and secondary general education stages, are described. Among the indicators, motivation of educational activity and anxiety are distinguished. A study of school adaptation of students of the first and fifth grades is described. The authors conclude that the process of adaptation at the level of primary general education is more comfortable than during the transition to the level of secondary general education. The possible causes of difficulties in the process of adaptation during the transition from primary to secondary general education are presented.
