The idiomatically unconventional nature of English phrasal verbs — which historically replaced the prefixal word-formation model — is reflected in the diversity of contextu-al meanings of the lexeme. The article explores the historical linguochronology of the lexico-grammatical formation of such complex, compound, or phrasal verbs across three major stages in the development of the English language: Old English, Middle English, and Modern English, including the Early Modern English period. It also out-lines the reasons for the emergence and proliferation of these phraseological units in English. The findings aim to deepen understanding of the semantics and pragmatics of English phrasal verbs and to foster motivation for their study. It is assumed that this will help overcome challenges associated with the polysemy and idiomatic nature of these units and promote more effective intercultural communication at various levels.
