The reasons for the origin of the “Moscow - Third Rome” theory are considered. Political insinuations around this religious doctrine are shown. An overview of the historiosophy of the issue is given. The work of the famous historian N. I. Ulyanov is analyzed. The focus is on two versions of his famous work “The Philotheus Complex”. The myth “about Russian imperialism” is refuted. Feedback from contemporaries on the article “The Philotheus Complex” is analyzed. The position of modern historians and philosophers of narrow specialists in the 16th century is shown. New archival sources introduced into scientific circulation for the first time are involved. Of particular interest is the analysis of the correspondence of N. I. Ulyanov and V. P. Nikitina.
