Italian antiquities and news in the epistolary responses of Yu. F. Samarin (1864-1865)

The overseas trip of Yu. F. Samarin, begun in the spring of 1864, continued for almost a year. It included two trips to Italy, however, it was this part of the journey that was not illuminated by the Slavophilе biographers. At this time, Samarin did not keep a diary, but shared his impressions in detail in letters to friends. The epistolary texts cited in the article (recently introduced into scientific circulation or still unknown) open the most active of all Slavophiles from an unusual side, as a resting, enlightened traveler, who carefully and with a gentle sense of humor assesses everything he encounters on his way. In the Appendix to the article, published is his letter to F. V. Chizhov from Venice.
