A study into iron effects on 60Co sorption by sandy soils

In laboratory experiments the regularities have been studied of iron effects on 60Co sorption by sandy soils. The content of mobile Fe in different sandy fractions has been found to be directly dependent on their dispersity. The maximum content of mobile Fe is reported in the fine sand fraction. The 60Co sorption by sandy soils reduces at different Fe concentrations in ground waters. More active reduction in sorption occurs with Fe concentration increase to 0.5 mg/l, by 4-10 %. Further increase in Fe concentration in water up to 1 mg/1 does not practically result in further decrease in the radionuclide sorption. An increase in Fe concentration in water to 0.05 mg/l (which is something like the iron concentration in natural water) causes an insignificant decline in the radionuclide sorption, by 1.0-3.8%.
