Code switching (switching from the native language into the foreign one; using loan words in native speech) is given a thorough examination on the grounds of inherent properties of the language units, their functions and motives of their employment. The data have been obtained in the course of observation of spontaneous native speech with its subsequent recording and component-contextual analysis. As a result, code switching motives have been outlined which include following the norms of professional jargon, social adaptation, language trends, quotation of the original texts. According to the linguistic research loan words do not assimilate or partially assimilate, i.e., grammatically or graphically. Code switching is a key phenomenon of the language situation in Russia today which can be neutralized through language policy and language ecology.
