The article is intended to introduce you to the origins and formation over the centuries of a variety of tableware, which, along with the culinary preferences of the Japanese, played a decisive role in the meal. Information is provided on the history of pottery in Japan, in particular tableware. Without touching on the gastronomic component, the artistic features of tableware, its decoration, and the specifics of serving dishes are brought to the fore. The data used prove that the aesthetic aspect of the feast is no less important than the gastronomic one. In the process of shaping, ceramists and masters of lacquered wooden utensils followed rationality, naturalness, and constructive logic, and as a result, the works of artistic significance came out of their hands. The purpose of this study is to show that when setting the table, the design features of the dishes that match the contents are strictly observed. The task is realized through the demonstration of various geometric shapes of dishes. The work used a system of methods that made it possible to specify the details: historical, comparative-typological, analytical. The article expands the boundaries of understanding that Japanese tableware, in addition to its utilitarian meaning, has great artistic meaning. It is proven that expediency and beauty are the alpha and omega of Japanese household tableware.
