The article analyzes the evolution of moral values in the views and activities of commanders of the Russian army and navy in the 19th - early 20th century. It emphasizes such determinants of the phenomenon, as the morals of the heads of state; the level of social and economic development, culture and education; wars and confrontation of political forces within the state; the influence of Western countries; and moral values of the previous generations of commanders. The trend to share moral values between the acting commanders and their successors has been consistently observed for the period studied and further on up to the present day. The author stresses that determinants, mentioned above led to the establishment of new moral values of the Russian commanders in the 19th - early 20th century, such as personal example in the performance of military duty; military pride; responsibility; charity; nobility and generosity; modesty; loyalty to military and naval traditions; pride in the service to the Tsar and the Fatherland; ambitions; patriotism; justice; proximity to subordinates. All these values should be applied for upbringing, education and training in the modern Russian Armed Forces.
