The article deals with the origin and establishment of the concept “distance education” in the native and foreign studies. There are revealed and analyzed the basic stages of the development of the concept. The author concludes about the tendencies of the transformation of the concept “distance education” and their relation with the development of the pedagogical theory and practice.
