On the issue of teaching a foreign language in a university of transport

The article reveals the features of teaching English in the professional sphere through the students' work with the texts for the specialty "Transport process management". It is believed that the preparation of students for real professional communication in a foreign language is designed to solve professionally-oriented training in foreign languages. The article reveals the concept of the term "professionally-oriented learning", which is used to refer to the process of teaching a foreign language in a non-linguistic university, focused on reading literature in the specialty, studying professional vocabulary and terminology, and currently on communication in the field of professional activity. The importance of the communicative approach is emphasized, since it implies a conscious approach to learning. Criteria for the selection of authentic reading materials, principles of organization and presentation of the material, goals and methods of teaching this type of language activity are considered. Using the communicative approach as a priority, the author presents on examples of possible tasks for working on text that remove language difficulties and facilitate understanding of the text. It is concluded that students are more motivated to learn English by reading and discussing professionally oriented texts using modern e-learning system «Blackboard».
