The issues raised in this article are of interest from the point of view of foreign language teaching in a non-linguistic university. The author defines an independent work concept, specifies its characteristic features, and differentiates groups of auto-methodical and subject knowledge and skills needed when working without teachers’ supervision. The necessity of their interaction is substantiated.
